Seminar Anand Oza - The walking droplet system as a hydrodynamic quantum analog

May 21, 2025 16:30 - Physical Seminar Series Announcement!

Two decades ago, Yves Couder and Emmanuel Fort demonstrated that a
millimetric oil droplet could self-propel while bouncing on the
surface of a vibrating fluid bath. Moreover, they found that this
walking droplet system exhibits many features typically associated
with the microscopic, quantum realm, such as single-particle
diffraction, tunneling over barriers, and quantization of orbits,
among others. The system has attracted considerable interest from the
scientific community, as it provides a means of visualizing the notion
of wave-particle duality. Moreover, it represents the first
macroscopic realization of a form of the so-called pilot-wave dynamics
proposed for quantum particles by Louis de Broglie in the 1920s. I
will give an overview of the walking droplet system, describing both
the original experiments and more recent ones that have uncovered yet
more quantum analogs. I will then discuss the theoretical models that
have been developed to describe the droplet dynamics, before
concluding with future directions.

Venue: Seminar Room, Physics Department, building 31 C, 4th floor
